9  Renault Megane Hatch

Pretty it ain’t, but Renault’s mass market hatch is a family car staple that’s cheap to repair. The fourth-gen version isn’t the cheapest to buy – RRP starts from £29,990 – but in terms of fix ups or flipping, parts can be easily sourced nationwide or online.

Need to know: Renault finished 16th on the What Car? reliability survey last year, ahead of Ford.

8  Citroen C4

The latest Citroen C4 is no slouch on the reliability front. It sports a smorgasbord of improved elements and its build largely mirrors the ultra-safe Peugeot 208. Low servicing costs and reasonable repair quotes make it a great option.

7  Mitsubishi Mirage

Mitsubishi has a boss reputation when it comes to reliability. The cute and dainty Mirage is cheap to run, lavishly equipped, and loads of parts are readily available — making it an ideal car to fix-up.

Need to know: New Mirages start at £12,805, so bidding on a decent Cat U could pay dividends.

6  Mercedes-Benz A Class

We know what you’re thinking, but as strange as it looks to see a luxury hatch on our cheapest cars list, the A-Class deserves a place if you bag one at Copart’s auctions – just look at the repair costs!

True, reliability issues can be a right pain in the arsenal, especially when compared to competitors BMW and Audi, but the A-Class sored an impressive 89% on Driver Power’s 2021 driver satisfaction list.

Need to know: Word to the wise - plenty of owners have been venting spleens about their local Mercedes dealerships.

5  Vauxhall Corsa

The Corsa is a Copart bestseller and for good reason – it’s ultra-reliable, cheap to maintain, parts are plentiful, and service costs are low. Clutch replacements can be pricey, mind.

Average yearly repair: £238
Need to know: While not as sturdy or fun to drive as the Fiesta, the Corsa is cheaper to buy, starting from £15K.

4  Ford Fiesta

Talk of the devil – if you’re looking for a supermini that’s economical, affordable and easy to repair, look no further than the best-selling Fiesta. It’s a great doer-upper and a fine choice for first-time flippers.

Need to know: The 2011-2018 Focus also deserves a nod – scoring 96% on What Car? reliability tests.

3  VW Polo

You’ll struggle to find a hatch with as much style, quality, and mass appeal as the beloved VW Polo. It’s cheap as chips to run, too. And repair. That said, brake pads and battery replacements can be more expensive than you think.

2  Toyota Yaris

The Yaris has been acing the reliability charts for donkey’s years. Its dinky frame, plentiful parts and all-round structural simplicity make it a no-brainer for quick fix-ups, but it’s surprising not to see it in the current Top 10 on the Reliability Index. Still, the iQ is number one, so  hats off to Toyota. 

Average yearly repair: £186.70
Need to know: Both the Prius and Aygo are worth a punt, too, with yearly averages of £190 and £200 respectively. 
 

1  Hyundai i10

Ah, bless it. As one of the smallest and cheapest cars on UK shores, it barely needs mentioning that the Hyundai i10 is no sweat at all to repair and service. It's stonking value for money, too, and only 4% of owners have reported faults.

Average yearly repair: £147.25
Need to know: You may laugh, but even Sherlock Holmes wouldn't find a reliability chart that doesn't feature the i10 in its Top 10.
