Useful Information
Why should I buy a salvage car?
There can be many reasons why a trader might buy a salvage vehicle. Some of those reasons include..
- For parts (CAT Bs) / Donor cars.
- To restore and resell.
- Vehicle conversions.
- Because salvage vehicles can be purchased at lower costs than used, non-salvage vehicles.
Who should purchase a salvage vehicle?
Salvage vehicles can vary in damage from light cosmetic, to deeper mechanical problems. As a result, there is not a one size fits all when considering taking on this challenge. Those who specialise in used vehicle repair would be more suited towards fixing vehicles with lighter damage whereas vehicles with heavier damage might be more suitable to experienced mechanics who have worked with repairable salvage before.

What is a salvage car?
A salvaged car is one that an insurance company deems to no longer be fit for use on the road.
If a vehicle is accident damaged and the repairs will cost more than the vehicle is worth, the insurance company will write it off.
Set out by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) categorisations sold at auction include:
Category B Breaker - Cannot return to the road but can be dismantled for spare parts. Bodyshells/frames must be crushed in their entirety including all welded/bonded sections.
Category C Repairable Salvage - The estimated full cost of necessary repair for known damage at current prevailing rates and prices exceeds the market valuation as defined by the insurer/owner at the incident date.
Category D - Repairable Salvage - The estimated full cost of necessary repair for known damage at current prevailing rates and prices is less than the market valuation as defined by the insurer/owner at the incident date.
Category S - Repairable Structural - A vehicle which has sustained damage to any part of the structural frame or chassis, and the insurer/self-insured owner has decided not to repair the vehicle.
Please note, V5 documents will not be provided with any CAT S vehicle.
Category N - Repairable Non-Structural - A vehicle which has not sustained damage to the structural frame or chassis and the insurer/self-insured owner has decided not to repair the vehicle.
