A Guide to Buying Motorcycles at Online Auction

Accident damaged vehicles can vary in damage from light cosmetic, to deeper mechanical problems. As a result, there is not a one size fits all when considering taking on this challenge. Those who specialise in used vehicle repair would be more suited towards fixing vehicles with lighter damage whereas vehicles with heavier damage might be more suitable to experienced mechanics who have worked with repairable salvage before.

Of course, if you have limited experience with damaged vehicles and are looking to take on your first salvage challenge, there’s no reason why this type of vehicle might not be appropriate if you can dedicate the time and care it takes to repair it.

Top Tips for Buying Motorcycles at Auction

1) Complete Your Checks

As with all our vehicles, our motorcycles are sold "as is where is" which means that it's crucial that you are aware of what you are buying, before you choose to bid.

  • Review the Lot information and photos that we provide. Look closely for any sign of damage, changes in the paintwork (signalling previous repairs) and signs of leaking/rust.
  • Complete an HPI check or vehicle enquiry check to get an idea of the vehicle's history.

More information can be found on our Buyer Checklist

2) Set Your Budget

In addition to the cost of the vehicle, make sure to fully consider all fees associated with purchasing a vehicle in an online auction. All Copart buying fees can be found on our Member fees page

3) Get Organised

  • Payment - It's advisable to look into accepted payment methods beforehand. This way you will know exactly how to arrange payment, and how long you will have to pay before you start incurring late fees.
  • Collection/Delivery - Ensure that you know the location of the vehicle before bidding, and that you have the means to collect the vehicle if you win. Motorcycles won at Copart must be loaded onto a Transporter and cannot be driven out of the Operations Centre, regardless of driving condition.
  • Alternatively, if you are looking to have your vehicle delivered, make sure to factor this cost into your budget.  A quote for the Copart delivery service can be provided prior to bidding.

4) Research Repair Parts

If you are looking to purchase a salvage motorcycle or a motorcycle with damage, we recommend that you research for available parts, beforehand. This will save you any hassle later on. Parts can be found using a number of sources. If you need multiple parts to repair one vehicle, we highly recommend our BreakerBid4U service which will allow you to break a make and model of YOUR CHOICE, for the parts that YOU NEED

What are the benefits of using BreakerBid4U to dismantle motorcycles?

When choosing to bid and break motorcycles using BreakerBid4U, you’ll benefit from:

  • First-class customer service – The BB4U team will help you from beginning to end, by placing your bid, arranging your breaker session, depolluting the vehicle ready for arrival at your breaker session and organising to have it disposed of after you’ve left.
  • Save on your bay rental fee – You’ll pay just £200 when you book to dismantle two motorcycles at the same location on the same day. That’s 33% cheaper than it would be for two cars.
  • Free transport costs – If your chosen motorbikes are going to auction at the same location as your chosen breaker bay – you won’t need to pay anything for transport.
  • A great number of parts – During your breaker session you could remove any of the following parts:
    lock set and keys
    wheels
    engine
    swing arm
    instrument cluster
    wiring loom
    seat
    fairings
    forks
brakes set (front and rear calipers brake lines etc.)
    lights (front and rear)

    fuel tank
    indicators
