Buying Category B Vehicles

Information for UK Based Buyers

Copart UK sells thousands of salvage vehicles every year through our online auction platform.

Among these vehicles, you’ll find Category B Breaker vehicles which have sustained severe damage and cannot legally be returned to the road. Despite not being able to go back on the road, these vehicles contain salvageable parts which could be used to repair other vehicles deemed able to return to the road.

To buy CAT B Breaker vehicles at auction you will need to meet the criteria specified below.

These criteria are specifically for UK Based CAT B buyers, if you are a buyer based overseas (inc. the Isle of Man and Channel Islands), please visit our Overseas CAT B buyers page.

In order to buy from our extensive range of CAT B vehicles, you must:

  1. Have a business with a registered business address, in the UK; and
  2. Accept Copart’s Terms and Conditions of Purchase and Use.

UK Based Category B Buyers Must:

  1. Provide us with up-to-date/valid copies of the following documents:
    • Your Environmental Permit (EP), (formerly called a Waste Management Licence (WML)) as issued by the Environment Agency (EA). If you do not have this licence and wish to obtain one, please telephone the EA on 03708 506506 (standard rates apply) and ask for the ‘’Environment Management Team’’ that deals with your postcode area.
    • Copy of a Certificate of Destruction (COD) dated not older than three months than the date of your application.
    • Your Upper Tier Waste Carriers Licence as issued by the Environment Agency.
    • Your Environment Agency Annual Subsistence Charge Invoice.
    • A copy of your Hazardous Waste Licence (unless you are a registered Member in Northern Ireland, England and Scotland where individual rules apply*).
  2. Once you have an EP/WML, you will then need to achieve Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) status with the Environment Agency.

Once you are set up as an ATF, you will then need to register/be set up online with the DVLA to notify them electronically of:

  • Certificates of Destruction (CODs) for cars; and/or
  • Notices of Destruction (NODs) for motorcycles, HGVs, commercial vehicles, and caravans electronically.

Upon request, you must supply Copart with a copy of a COD / NOD (clearly showing your EP / WML number) for all Category B vehicles purchased from us within 30 days of the date the Lot left a Copart Operations Centre.

If you are a registered Member in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland you must have an Upper Tier Waste Carriers Licence as issued to you by either Scottish Environment Protection Agency, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency or the National Resources Wales, respective to your location.

We reserve the right to refuse Category B permissions to either our UK or overseas-based Category B Buyers at our absolute discretion at any time.
