DVSA Compliance on Vehicle Collection
In addition to our Mainland UK delivery service, we are proud to be able to offer our members with a seamless collection experience, allowing you to pre-book a date and timeslot without having to worry about any queues.
With the high number of collections we experience at our UK Operations Centres every day, we wanted to remind you of the 3 DVSA compliance areas that are critical to ensure that you are collecting and transporting your vehicles safely.
Excessive Weight
You must ensure that the vehicle you are using to transport your winning Lot, is able to safely cope with the weight of the vehicle that it is transporting.
The maximum weight will depend on the vehicle you are using.
Those who are found to be transporting excess weight (more than the transporter can safely handle) will likely incur a fixed penalty notice (up to £300) and the vehicle could be stopped from moving any further.
Drivers Hours
Maximum driving hours are applied to HGV and heavy load drivers to ensure that they are driving safely, and not endangering other road users.
The main EU rules on driving hours state that you must not drive more than:
- 9 hours in a day (this can be extended to 10 hours twice a week)
- 56 hours in a week
- 90 hours in any 2 consecutive weeks (00:00 hours on a Monday to 23:59 on Sunday)
Regulations are also set for rest times and international driving.
Roadworthiness
When towing or transporting your vehicle, it is critically important that the transportation vehicle is deemed roadworthy – meaning there is not a serious defect or significant breakdown of the maintenance procedures.
The maintenance procedures include annual testing, walkaround checks and braking requirements.
For more information on the three areas above, please read the DVSA Recovery Vehicle Guide.
For more information on DVSA roadside checks, including fines and fixed penalties, please refer to this DVSA Guide.
Unsure if your transporter is compliant with the areas above?
You can organise for a third-party transporter to collect on your behalf. You can forward your collection request to the transporter using the Copart site, and they will use our dedicated Transportation app to book the collection.
Concerned about collection?
You can always opt to use our Mainland UK delivery service instead. Get an instant quote and book your vehicle online, using your Copart UK account.
