A large number of vehicles on our website will have a salvage category listed against them. Such categories can range from category B total loss vehicles to category D insurance write-offs.
In the UK, categories of vehicle salvage are set by the Association of British Insurers (‘ABI’) and are listed in its Code of Practice for the Disposal of Motor Vehicle Salvage (the ‘ABI Code of Practice’). The ABI uses the following categories as an indication of the level of the damage to a vehicle.
What is a Category A vehicle? Category A - SCRAP only (i.e. with few or no economically salvageable parts and which is of value only for scrap metal) e.g. total burnouts * Copart UK Limited do not sell Category A vehicles.
What is a Category B vehicle? Category B - BREAK for spare parts if economically viable (excluding any residual scrap value).
What is a Category C vehicle? Category C - REPAIRABLE total loss vehicles where repair costs including VAT exceed the vehicle’s pre-accident value (PAV).
What is a Category D vehicle? Category D - REPAIRABLE total loss vehicles where repair costs including VAT do not exceed the vehicle’s PAV.
Other Categories
Category X/U - Minimal Damage and Category U-Unrecorded are outside of the ABI Code of Practice and denote other vehicles not classified as total loss under the code.

Here at Copart we also sell vehicles that have no salvage category assigned to them. These vehicles are often used vehicles that are available for purchase in our live online auctions. View stock
